Awards of Excellence Winner in Residential Design
The original client brief was to create a useable outdoor living area with enough lawn space for the homeowners two young sons to enjoy. During the planning and conceptualization phase, the design needs grew to include an outdoor kitchen,
fireplace, water feature, landscape lighting and two patio areas for dining and entertaining. The homeowners were torn between creating a contemporary outdoor living space and traditional garden to complement the architecture of the home.
It became evident that there needed to be a unique juxtaposition of contemporary detailing and old Rosedale tradition, which would tie the outdoor rooms and garden elements together.
The old ‘Cotswold’ garden planters made of Manitoulin stone complemented the ‘walled garden feel’ and contrasted with the clean and contemporary white Indiana Limestone terraces. Low custom wrought iron fencing with tempered, glazed and
tinted glass inserts bordered the landscape and blocked the views to the drive. The outdoor kitchen expanded to an L-shaped counter with a stainless steel Viking gas grill and side burner built into a custom enclosure with stainless steel cabinetry.
Below the opposite counter sits an outdoor beverage centre and wine cellar to complete the outdoor kitchen experience.
The uneven grade that divided the property into two narrow areas was levelled to create a useable lawn area. As a result, we were able to create a lower terrace adjacent to the home that offered more privacy and a sense of enclosure.
The second patio area included a natural stone surround with a stainless steel fireplace insert with an ethanol burner. A bespoke wall of cascading water offers additional interest beyond the expanse of lawn and to break the view of the high brick wall perimeter.
Each tempered glass panel is lit for a more dramatic effect in the evening and the tiered water trough provides plenty of interest for their young sons and reduces the white noise from the neighbourhood.
The plant palette was kept to a minimum with strict orders for a low maintenance and textural, yet traditional palette of green and white. The Agapanthus ‘Bressingham Blue’ was a welcome surprise for the homeowners and provided a hint of tradition and colour.
Overall, the essence of this newly created space delivers a warm yet clean and contemporary exterior for living. We are very honoured to receive this award and a special thank you to the homeowners who graciously donated their time to the submission.
